One Badass Powdered Dishwasher Soap Recipe

Next up on my plate (pun intended, hardy har)…

…was to make my own powdered dishwasher detergent.  I’ve really never had a problem with the commercial ones I was using, but…I like a challenge…and if it 1) saves me money, 2) allows me to NOT use a commercially chemical-laden one and, 3) I can boast that I made it myself…well then, kudos to it!

Why powdered?

Because that’s what I started with. *shrug*

*Disclaimer: I don’t know what kind of water you have (hard or soft)…so I don’t know how you’ll find this…but for me, living in the good ol’ Canuck capital of Ottawa…it works for me.  For the past couple of weeks, actually…I wanted to give it a good test run before posting*

I took a gaggle of ideas that I’d found on the interwebs/cyberspace/bytelands …all pretty much consist of the same base materials, with only minor tweaking and primping.

One Badass Dishwasher Soap Recipe

1/2 cup citric acid

1/2 cup coarse grind salt

1 cup borax

1 cup Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda

I didn’t know what in the blue hell the “citric acid” was, so I Googled it, and found out I could get some at my local brewery store! 🙂 There’s a Defalco’s just down the road…awesomesauce.

I also was a bit of a “salt noob” and wasn’t aware that there were different kinds of grinds available.

There is.

Mind blown.

If it makes it easier, look for “Kosher Salt.”

1.  Mix all dry ingredients together.

2.  Fill the rinse agent dispenser with vinegar.

I use one medicine cup (cuz I have eleventy-zillion laying around) per load…the equivalent to approx. 20mL,, or one heaping tablespoon.

I also like to put in a drop or two of lemon essential oil into the powder.  I’ll be honest, I don’t think it does anything, but I associate “clean” with “lemon”, and I put it in just cuz I’m bat-shit crazy like that.

Survey says?  I’ll be using this recipe forever and always.  I had a huge issue using vinegar as a rinse agent for dishes at first…I mean, cloth diapers and laundry is one thing…but what I eat on!?

Non-issue.

OH!! And the very, very bestest part?

It costs me just under $0.04 per load.

HUZZAH! 🙂
